May Happenings Grade 1-5

May was a crazy month as HVC. We had 6 days of STAR testing ( 3 in April and 3 in May), so some classes did not get to visit the media center for 2 weeks. The highlight of May was the District Young Author Fair held on May 22 at James Logan High School. This year featured author Dean Pitchford and he talked about his book for tweens The Big One-oh.

Mrs. Coppini and Mrs. Morris-Wong set up the display for Hillview Crest. The following classes participated in the 2008 YAF and received certificates of participation. As follows: Kinders [Room 1AM & PM Mrs. Fogel and Mrs. Morneau, Room 2 AM Ms. Baumback, and Room 3AM Mrs. Kemp, Grade 1 Room 6 Mrs. Coppini (as usually the fairytale puppets were one of the highlights of the Fair), Grade 2 Room 13 Ms. Pederson, Grade 3 we had 100% grade level participation ( Room 18 Mrs. Ly, Room 19Mrs. Hodgson, Room 25 Mrs. Manha, Room 28 Mrs. Catson, Room 30 Mrs. Keane, and Room 31 Ms. Huber), also 100% participation from Grade 4 ( room 20 Ms. Leung, Room 26 Ms. Lieu and Room 29 Ms. Hill) and 5th grade Room 39 Ms. McIntosh and Room 40 Mr. Speakman).

All classes also viewed a DVD from the Union City Library that introduced the 2008 summer reading program entitled "Catch the Reading Bug for students in Grades K-6. Graduating 5th graders were encouraged to consider becoming a Kid Power volunteer at the Union City Library during the summer.

Grade 1


We continued to review fiction and nonfiction and learned about the 700-799 section (Arts, Music, sports) We read the book and viewed the video for Camille Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals. This allowed the students to hear different musical instrument sounds, see different musical instruments, and think of music books being in the 700 section. (Standard 1.3.1 Understands difference between fiction and nonfiction and 1.3.6 locates fiction and nonfiction in a variety of formats).


We also celebrated National Bike Safety month by reading David Shannon's Duck on a Bike and viewing a movie called "I'm no fool with a Bicycle". Since Memorial Day falls on the last week of May, we viewed a video on Memorial Day and also learned about the Challenger space shuttle disaster and the first teacher in space , Christa McAuliffe.

Grade 2 Media
We spent this month learning about the atlas, which is a book about maps. We saw a video called The Animated Atlas . We had the following books read to us: Me on the Map by Joan Sweeney and There's a map on my lap: all about maps by by Tish Rabe and Aristides Ruiz. We talked about the difference between a city/town, state, and country. We also learned what a continent was and looked at pictures of all 7, the four oceans, and we also learned how to identify difference symbols on a map. We also practiced some skills using the primary atlas from Rand McNally. This tied in nicely as many of our 2nd grade classrooms were doing Flat Stanley activities. (Standard 1.2.2 Identifies parts of a book: table of contents and page numbers, Standard 1.2.4 Understands the general organization of an Atlas).

Grade 2 Music
We read the book and viewed the video for Camille Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals. We identified the different instruments and families by picture and sound.(Standard 1.5 Identify visually and aurally individual wind, string, brass, and percussion instruments used in a variety of music).We also learned about the Voice family and talked about different singing styles in a choir.

Grade 3 Media
We already knew that Fiction books were books that were not true and that books in the easy and 398.2 section were examples of fiction books. We were introduced to the chaper book section. We reviewed that many chapter books may be hard to us to read and we need to open the book to the middle and use the five finger rule. We also viewed a Media Mania Fiction Nonfiction video. If 5 or more words are too hard for us to read, then we need to select another book. We also learned that all chapters books are arranged in Alphabetical order by Author's last name and we practiced putting cards in Alphabetical order and also lining up by last name in Alphabetical order.

We continued to work on using an encyclopedia to answer questions.We also were introduced to another Reference book called the Almanac. We viewed a video called All about the Almanac and learned that an Almanac is a reference books all about facts and statistics. We also got to practice using both the index and table of contents in an Almanac to find answers to questions.

We completed the following Media and Information literacy standards: 1.2.3 Identifies the parts of a book: dedication, glossary, index, and table of contents;1.2.4 Identified the general organization of a print dictionary, theasaurus, encyclopedia, and almanac; 1.3.1 Understands the difference between fiction and nonfiction; 1.3.4 Identifies Reference Materials; 1.5.1 Learns that the fiction section is organized alphabetically by the author's last name, 1.5.2 Identifies the call number in the fiction section as the author's last name alphabetized to the first letter, 1.5.3 Alphabetizes to the second letter to locate books by call number; and 2.1 Identifies and compares characteristics of fiction and nonfiction.

Grade 4
Students continued to work on reference worksheets that we have been working on for the past few months. We also were introduced to the Big Six reserach skills through the website Big Six Kids. We also listened to a book and cd-rom called Rappin’Ronni, Research Rat,
by Michael and Valerie Charbeneau. We practice some scenarios that we could use big six steps such as deciding what movie theater to go to and how to make ice cream sundaes. We also review a past animal project that was done which can be located at 5th Grade Animal Project 2003 We also reviewed all nonfiction and reference books plus magazines that we could use to find animal resources and the students worked with the 4th grade teachers in the classroom on animal projects.

The following media and information standards were completed: 1.3.4 Identifies Reference materials, 1.3.9 knows and locates general contents of the reference section, 1.3.12 Identifies appropriate sources for classroom assignments and personal use and locates them idependently, 1.4.2 Uses Dewey Decimal system to locate resources independently, 1.6.3 performs a basic search by title, author, and subject using an automated library catalog (CATS),1.9.9 Uses a variety of printand digital reference materials to locate information, and1.9.13 Uses scanning and skimming skils to locate information.

Grade 5
We also practiced District Technology Standards 3D Using email with teacher for instructional purposes, 4D Sending and replying to email, and 5D using email.
Students also learned how to change their password and how to make a signature.
We also discussed that our email account is owned by New Haven Unified School District and talked about what we can and can't send via district email. We also learned that email is a priviledge and not a right (District Technology standards for Grade 5B 1 and 2).

We also reviewed plagiarism as we heard the story When Marion Copied: Learning about Plagiarism By Brooke Berg and Nathan Alberg. We did not get to go into citations in great deal but we talked about to be sure to make a reference page and to list title, author, publisher, place published and copyright date for books: include volume, title, name of article and pages for Encyclopedia:
and list name of website and webaddress for websites. We also were shown how just typing in a copied sentence from a website a teacher can find that you plagiarized and did not do your own work. We also went over Cybersmart manners; respecting the law which can be found at CyberSmart: Whose is it anyway?(Standards 1.9.23 records author, title, and other citations elements systematically while accessing information sources and 8.1 Respects copyright and fair use.)
