January Media News Grades1-4


Grade 1
1st grade are still continuing to check out Easy Fiction books, but are getting better with Standard 1.1 Knowing library procedures for circulation and care for equipment. We also are hearing many different stories to learn about parts of a book such as call #, spine. title. author, illustrator ( Standard 1.2.1).

Some of the topics and books that we have covered for the month of January are: New Years Day, calendar ( reviewing months, days of the week, seasons, night and day); and Introduction to Martin Luther King's life reading simple biographies and learning why we celebrate the holiday. We also talked about the Presidential election and introducted voting for the California Young reader Medal books and read A Giant hug and talked about the postoffice and mailing letters. (Standard 5.1 Learns about Children's authors and Illustrators and the purpose of Children's book awards.)

Grade 2
The 2nd Graders have completed learning about both the Fiction (not true) and Nonfiction (true) sections of the media center. (Standard 1.4.1 and Standrad 1.4.2 Understands the basic organization system of the ten Dewey Decimal classes and how to locate resources independently). We had a lot of fun learning about Mummies made in Egypt and that mummies can be found in both the 932 History and Geography section and 393 getting along section.

We talked about the California Young Reader Medal Books and started reading I wanna Iguana We also read some factual Iguana information from Animal Printouts to meet Standard 2.1 Locating and Understanding Information from Nonfiction text.

We also were introduce to the biography section when we learned about Martin Luther King. (Standard 1.3.8 locates general contents in biography section.

Grade 2 Music

We are still exploring the Instrument families and are learning about the huge woodwinds and brass families. We used an old story called Brother John and the Orchestra and got to see what an old LP record and filmstrip looked liked. We also are reviewing sounds of Instruments through San Francisco Symphony Kids Instruments of the Orchestra The kids can see pictures and listen to instruments sounds

We are also using various Silver Brudett Ginn Music and music videos plus sheets from Enchanted learning so that the students understand and appreciate what the Instrument looks like and sounds like.

Grade 3
Standard 1.2.4 Understands general Organization of a Dictionary
Standard 1.3.9 Understands general contents of the Reference Section

We watched the media mania video on reference and also read Mr. Wiggle's knows the answers. The types of book in the reference section are: Dictionary, Thesaurus, Encyclopedia, almanac, and atlas. In the HVC media center, reference books are located behind the checkout desk. We can't take them home because: 1) they are too heavy, 2) they are too expensive, and 3) they get used a lot.

We read the book The Boy who loved Words by Ron Schotter. We learned that dictionaries help us find what words mean, how to spell words, how to pronounce words, and how to divide words in to syllables. We learned that dictionaries are arranged in alphabetical order and when we use a print dictionary we use the words on the top of the pages called Guide words to help us find the word. We practiced using print dictionaries to find words using guide words. We can find dictionaries that we can take home in the 400 Language section.

We learned how to turn on the new IMACS and use the browser Firefox. We Learned that WWW means world wide web. We learned to use www.dictionary.com and how to type in words and look for their meaning.

Grade 4

All of the 4th grade students have finished using Power Kids Mission books to learn about the organization and parts of a book. Several students are still working on the series Fiesta to review our knowledge of parts of a book. They are also learning how to identify bordering countries and bodies of water. They are also exploring religion, how to say greetings in our language, holidays. crafts. recipes, and songs from other countries. This will also familarize them with the 900-999 History and Geography section and learn how to use the table of contents and read Nonfiction for detail and facts.

We also are learning about and reviewing reference books that we learned about in grade one such as the Encyclopedia. ( Standard 1.3.9 locates and knows general contents of the reference section). We are practicing reading an article on "California" from the Student Discovery Encyclopedia and answering questions about the state we live in. (standard 1.2.4 Knows the general organization of an encyclopedia. We are also using the Heinemann First Encyclopedias to search for information and write the answer to the questions in complete sentences.

Rooms 26 and 29

We will be learning how to use CATS, our online Catalog for Authors, Titles, and Subjects (Library Online Catalog). This catalog can be accessed anywhere someone has a connection to the Internet at http://library.nhusd.k12.ca.us/
