Media November & December Grade 1-4


Grade 1

In media, we did the American Red Cross Scrubby Bear program to learn about germs, handwashing, and how to not get sick by washing up quick. We also learned about book care and library media center procedures. Most of the students are remembering to bring the book back on media day. We also learned about the Jewish holiday Hanukkah and compared The Runaway Latkes to The Gingerbread Man.
We also learned to appreciate American Indian/Native American culture as we heard the stories Whale in the Sky, The story of Jumping Mouse and How Raven Stole the Sun. We will finish out the year learning about the season of Winter (snow and hibernation and loss of leaves on trees) and the little known holiday of Kwanzaa that not everyone celebrates,

Standard 1.1. 1 Understands how to care for library materials, check out and follow library rules
Standard 1.2.1 Learns who to ask for help
Standard 1.3.1 Respects other library users
Standard 1.4.1 learns library procedures through orientation
Standard 1.5.1 follows library procedures
1.6.1 knows differences between school and public library
1.7.1 demonstrates growth and understanding of library procedures
1.8.1 uses other libraries to supplement library media center resources ( classroom library, public Library)
Standard 8 Selects appropriate library materials using 5 finger rule
Standard 5 Learns to appreciate children's literature
5.1.4 Compares and contrasts different versions of same stories that represent different cultures
5.1.5 Compare and contrasts character, plots, settings and themes

GRADE 2

We have been working on all of the standards listed for 1st grade and also
1.3 Knows types and locations of media materials
1.3.1 Understands difference between fiction and nonfiction
1.4 Learns how to use library book classification system
1.4.1 So far we have learned 8 of the ten Dewey Decimal Classification Systems
1.4.2 Uses Dewey Decimal System to Locate resources independently

For November and December, we have learned about the 300-399 section "getting along", 400-499 language, 600-699 Technology and Hobbies and are now learning about the 700-799 Sports, Arts, Music and will finish up the year with the 800-899 Literature section ( poems, plays, riddles)

MUSIC Room 17 and now 31

Standard 1.5 Identify visually and aurally individual wind, string, brass, and percussion instruments used in a variety of music.

We just finished learning about the different groups in the String family: bowed ( violin, viola, cello, double bass) and plucked ( guitar, harp, banjo). We are reviewing the keyboard family (piano, organ, synthesizer). We also have been listening to instruments in the string, percussion, and keyboard family to learn how to recognize them by sound. Our next family will be the woodwind family.

GRADE 3 Media

We are learning about the different parts of a book. We are working on Information Literacy Standard 1.2 Knows Parts of a book

Standard 1.2.1 identifies parts of a book: cover,title, title page,author, illustrator, spine, spine label.

Standard 1.2.2 Identifies parts of a book: table of contents, publisher, number of pages, copyright date, and call number.

Standard 1.2.3 Identifies parts of a book: glossary, index, and dedication.

Standard 1.3.2 Uses index to location information in nonfiction resources.

We watched the Media Mania Research video and also practiced the quiz at Who am I? Parts of a book

We also are practicing our skills by doing worksheets using Wildlife Educations Zoobooks and Hello USA State Series.

Grade 4 Media
We are learning about the different parts of a book. We are working on Information Literacy Standard 1.2 Knows Parts of a book

We are using the series Powerkids Mission books and Fiesta to review our knowledge of parts of a book. It is also hoped that we will be familar with the Mission books once our teachers start assigning us California Mission projects.

We also are learning about and reviewing reference books that we learned about in grade one such as the Encyclopedia. ( Standard 1.3.9 locates and knows general contents of the reference section). We are practicing reading an article on "California" from the Student Discovery Encyclopedia and answering questions about the state we live in. (standard 1.2.4 Knows the general organization of an encyclopedia)
